As much as I love the stories of D-Day and the American/British fight against Germany in WWII, the fact is that Germany lost the war because they were fighting Russia---I think something like 90% of their casualties were on the Eastern Front.

That whole conflict is incredibly mind-boggling in scale. I mean, the Pacific Theater was also huge, but the action was sporadic. But we're talking about a 1,000 mile front here, with something like 10 MILLION men duking it out, day after day, for nearly 4 years.

I recently read part of a book called < Stalin's Folly >, which makes the claim that Stalin was actually preparing to attack Hitler, which partly explains why the Red Army got thrashed so soundly the first year.

Then today I read this: < http://westhunt.wordpress.com/2012/02/02/war-in-the-east/ >

The books generally say that biological warfare is ineffective, but then they would say that, wouldn’t they? There is reason to think it has worked, and it may have made a difference.

Once upon a time,  it was spring 1942, and the Germans were on a roll...

Fascinating.

The Russians and Nazis divided up Poland pretty early on.  It was pretty obvious they were both aggressive and both wouldn't settle for sharing the continent with the other guy, just as Hitler would not have stopped from attacking Japan if he'd managed to get across Asia.

I have no idea what I am trying to say.
