What did Facebook do that Myspace didn't?  Just curious.  One day Myspace had a hundred million users, a month later Myspace was a joke.  What happened?

If you've ever looked at MySpace, I think that answers itself.

Noted.

Does anyone have a better answer?

A lot.

The layout of MySpace sucked money balls. Almost every page was a nightmare to load thanks to music and backgrounds that were customizable and loaded up when you visited a page. The search function was terrible. The whole thing was mainly populated by teens and D list celebs. Viruses and nude photos were quite common on MySpace.

Facebook, on the other hand, seemed to start off by grabbing adults and corporations. It had a clean look which seemed to give it credibility. It also seems to be a lot more family friendly.

Oh yeah, I remember the annoying audio files on a bunch of myspace pages.

So that's it... poor decisions about layout sunk a billion dollar company?

Leisher just put more words to my answer.

Facebook aimed at college students, and let's face it... at least some part of everyone wants to be in college.

MySpace is/was ghetto.

With MySpace you have a lot more control over how you make your page look.  Which is a really bad idea, given how bad most people are at web design.

I don't use Facebook myself, but how is the spam on there?  That was something else that helped kill MySpace, but I don't know if it's a factor that is different between the two.

Spam: On Facebook I thought I had a good handle on blocking the "Person X just got Achievement Y in Game Z!  You should click here and help them out!"  stuff, but the last week or so, all of a sudden I am getting that crap from multiple people.  I am wondering if Facebook changed some permission in everyone's accounts so stuff that was previously blocked is now not.

I don't know.

All I know for sure is last week I wasn't seeing this stuff at all, and this week more than 50% of the posts I see from my friend list are these stupid games.

One solution that worked for me on Twitter was to immediately unfriend anyone that posted any of that crap.  You'd be surprised how quickly you can cut the spam that way, and I bet you'll find that less than half your friends are posting 95%+ of all that spam.

Leisher would be the first to go... he told me he changed his account so that only people who play that game get those updates, but I'm still seeing them.

Fake edit: Actually, I just now looked so I could list what I was seeing from Leisher, and ALL of that stuff is now being filtered out.  So I have no idea what is going on.

Facebook permissions seem to work a lot like Microsoft Updates. You disable MSN Messenger and that stupid Language Bar, but do an update and there they are again.

Empires & Allies is the game you're referring to and I gave it a try because it looked like CivWorld, but better. I was right, but it's also the typical Zynga game that requires cash or about a million friends to have any success in the game. So don't expect me to be there long. In fact, I might already be done.
