So I've always been the type who figured the annual maintenance plans were basically a rip.

A year ago we bought a house, which was 11 years old, so the HVAC is now 12 years old.  It caused us grief last year, but turned out an insulation panel had fallen onto the evaporator, so I figured that out, and called some dude and he fixed it.

This year it couldn't keep our bonus room cool on an 87 degree day (went up to 79; set to 76).  So I called the HVAC people, and he figured out 2 potential issues.  And he gave me the whole "get on a maintenance plan and this call is free, and we'll clean everything 2x/year, etc, etc" so I'm like sure.

Turns out the cleaning really did help.  (The outside condenser).  Today's about 93, and the bonus room is keeping a steady 74.  Granted, the unit's running pretty much 100% of the time, but it's working.

So apparently these things do need some maintenance.  I guess I could have just paid for the cleaning, but wth, better someone look at this stuff than me.

I've personally never heard of a maintenance plan for home appliances.

Our electric company called us and tried to sell us one that covered anything plugged into the wall.
