The problem with sequels is that you're immediately not going to be surprised by the characters because you already know how they will act. Hollywood has been trying to figure out how to make sequels good for, oh ever.
To this day there are still only a handful of sequels worth a damn, although they have been appearing more and more as of late. The Godfather 2 proved a good sequel could be made then the Sci-Fi genre almost stole the idea of good sequels for themselves with the SW series, ST 2(& 4, 6, 8), Aliens, etc. Lately, the number of good sequels are picking up because they've been discovering its not so much adding more bang, but rather sticking to their characters that makes the magic happen again.
That brings us to Shrek 2, which is a great movie.
Fans of the first film will not be disappointed at all. All the original characters are back and apparently voiced by the same actors.
This time out, the story finds Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey headed to Fiona's parents so they can meet Shrek. Hilarity ensues.
What makes the film work is that non of the characters acts in a way you wouldn't expect. They all are true to their motivations from the first film.
Adding to the magic are a few new characters, including a new villain. All are played to perfection, and one character in particular steals the show.
In my eyes, Shrek 2 seemed lighter on the kid's jokes this time around, and appeared to really throw more adult jokes out there. That's just my opinion though, and I've been advised by friends with children that their kids loved it, so you shouldn't feel like its now an adult film.
Keep an eye out for all the film tributes. It seemed like they've really upped the number and you've got to have a fast eye to catch them all.
Overall, if you liked Shrek, you'll like Shrek 2. If you didn't like Shrek, why the hell not? Stop taking life so seriously.
Go see it with your S.O., kids, family, friends, whatever. Its good for all ages.
9 out of 10 stars.

The funny part is that I thought of Malcolm when I wrote that line. I wondered if he'd take offense to it.

Careful, if you keep this up, I'm going to exceed my humor quota for the day and won't be able to laugh at work for the rest of the day.

Saw the movie and was entertained. I didn't find it as good as the first but still a good flick. All the movie references throu me. I have to see it again to see if I can catch more. 7 1/2 out of 10 stars.
