Eh ... there's a real forest people go to in Japan and it's very fashionable to hang yourself there. Ā Given some of the cultural modes over there, it's not hard to jump from that to ghosts to "true" story.  It's Amityville true.

Yeah, that's what started the conversation. When a 6 year old hears a horror movie trailer say "True Story" it gives parents something to explain.

Sometimes "based on a true story" just means "based on lies previously told by someone else".
