I thought I had written a review of this a while back, but apparently not.

This is an excellent documentary on the captivity of orcas, specifically the ones at Sea World.

If you know nothing of orcas, I recommend you research them. It's possible that they're the second smartest creature on the planet. The teamwork and intelligence on display when they hunt is the stuff of nightmares. They are the legit ruler of the oceans as they have been known to kill Great Whites.

I cannot recommend this movie enough, and honestly, it'll change your mind about Sea World if you have a positive opinion of them. It's not just the captivity of the animals, but the treatment they receive as well. I know many people look at Sea World as zoos for fish, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Zoos care for their animals and are about education and conservation. Sea World is about profits.

If a zoo is a 5 star restaurant and the animals are the food, Sea World is the discount buffet.

The documentary ends with a sobering statistic that I won't ruin here because I think it's the hammer pounding a nail into Sea World's side of the argument. Just know that although the numbers are "low", they're pretty much damning.

See this movie.

Anyway, the reason this was brought up to me today is because a former Sea World trainer has blasted the company for its treatment of Orcas.

There is no higher priority for SeaWorld than the health and well-being of its animals.

Then they might want to release them into the goddamned ocean.

I think there are some chimps and gorillas that beat them on a few accounts like tool use.

They are the top hunters in the ocean.  I think these dudes are the best hunters on land.

Lawsuit.
QUOTE
The filing comes six months after a stockholder sued SeaWorld, claiming the park denied its recent decline was due to the 2013 documentary “Blackfish.” The film focuses on Tilikum, an orca held by SeaWorld, and the controversy over captive killer whales.
...
In December, another class action was filed against the park, this time over allegations that it automatically renewed annual passes without consumers’ consent and didn’t follow the wording of its own contract when confronted with excessive charges.
...
Wednesday’s class action was filed just days after SeaWorld launched a new advertising campaign highlighting its leadership in the care of killer whales and contributions to protect whales both in human care and in the wild.

Thinking they're screwed on this one unless the management gets changed.

QUOTE
“There’s been a lot of misinformation and even lies spread about SeaWorld, and we recognize that it has caused some people to have questions about the welfare of killer whales in human care,” said David D’Alessandro, chairman and interim CEO.

Yeah, thing is Dave, they were spread by you.

Keeps going.  Someone launched a John Hargrove defamation site to defend Sea World after he released his book.  Website was registered a week before the book dropped.

I've never seen the documentary and not sure if I have enough "care" to sit down and watch it.  I don't think they treat their show animals very well.  But I also know that they do a lot to rehab wounded marine animals and return them to the wild.  Manatees are  repeat customers due to their lack of having any sort of long term memory which allows them to swim into a boat propeller just after being released back into the wild after rehabbing from having swam into a boat propeller.

See, if SeaWorld is going to start smearing the people who are making these claims, it makes me take the claims more seriously.  That sort of stuff is usually only resorted to by companies when they are in the wrong and running scared.

That's kind of what I'm thinking.  You can be a drunken racist without affecting your correctness on issues of marine biology.

Saw the Sea World propaganda commercial.

"The orcas live just as long in captivity as they do in the wild."

Yep, pretty sure they'd all fucking bail given the chance, though.

Of course they won't stop. Blackfish was pretty big. There's no way it didn't impact Seaworld's bottom line.

End of the day, people want to see animals in captivity, but they want to see them treated humanely and given awesome living habitats, not cages.

Seaworld's going to have a far more difficult time with that than zoos.

Saw SeaWorld show up for the semi wreck in New England where the sharks spilled out onto the highway.  And a story over the weekend (didn't catch what it was all about, just on TV) where they were helping a manatee.  Big awesome habitats will cut into that stuff quite a bit.

SeaWorld challenges law.
QUOTE
She [vice chair of the California Coastal Commission, Dayna Bochco,] went on to add that killer whales were among the most “inherently unsuited for captivity,” and central to the health of marine ecosystems.

I'm sure SeaWorld will argue 10M gallons of water is all an orca needs, damnit.

Good.  Animals aren't here to learn tricks and live in relatively tiny tanks.
