Valve released 5 Source MODs for Steam users, the only catch being that you must own a Source game to get them for free and play them.

The FNF folks are talking about Insurgency and Age of Chivalry (I think that's the name). I might download them and give them a shot depending on reviews over there.

I've already downloaded and am anxious to try Zombie Panic.

I also might be curious in Synergy which apparently allows HL2 and such to be played co-op...?

Ok, I'll admit I wasn't 100% sold on steam at the beginning, but after playing hl2 and dod in the first year, i got sold, combine with the greatness that is TF2 and now THIS... that's how game company should act man.

I guess to sum up this post... Fuck EA.

I still hate that I can't play games WITH OFFLINE CONTENT and THAT I HAVE PAID IN FULL FOR when my internet service is down.  That is a major flaw in the system and one reason I don't intend to spend a single penny more with them until they fix it.  Or until I am on a 100% uptime unbreakable connection of some sort.

I thought we covered that?

You can!

Oh?  It seemed to me that when I spent nearly two weeks with power but no internet connection and tried to play Half-Life 2 and Portal (etc) it kept insisting I had to log into Steam first.  I tried everything.  It refused.

Which sucked because the only games I had that didn't require some sort of online connection were those and minesweeper and solitaire.  Now I have pirated Spore I could play instead, but it too would be just as useless if I had actually paid for it, apparently.

EDIT: If you can figure it out and test it (i.e. unplug and then play anyway) then I will retract my complaint.  But do be sure to tell me how you did it.

I'm pretty sure Troy is right and you can play those games offline, but I'm not positive.

I believe we covered this topic previously and someone found a thread covering it in the Steam forums. I'll do a search for it tomorrow if nobody has beat me to it.

There was a thread where I said it on this very forum.

I'm far to lazy to find it.

But the skinny of it is that I downloaded one of the Call of Duties right before Time warner smashed a screwdriver in my cable box, and for the week that it was out, I just played in "steam offline mode" and had no trouble playing the singleplayer stuff!

How to play Steam games offline.

Another thing I like about Steam is being able to enter codes for older games, like I've recently done with HL, HL: Blue Shift, and HL: Opposing Force. Now I no longer need the CDs.

I'd love it if they got more third party support for other games so that I could register more games. Imagine being able to store your entire collection on Steam. You'd register those CD keys and be able to store your CDs and theoretically never need them again, yet have the whole collection available to you anytime and anywhere.

In TPR's defense, he wouldn't have been able to google that info when he needed it.

Well, according to the instructions I am reading in that thread, the first step to doing this is to log in online to Steam.  That's fucking retarded.  If I could go online I wouldn't need to play offline.

Unless I'm missing something, of course.  But I'm pretty sure it's clearly saying first you must log in online to Steam, THEN you can select File -> Go Offline.  No wonder I couldn't get it to work.

Worthless.

Heh, if that's true and the Steam servers get washed away in a tsunami, no one can play, ever.

I guess anytime a hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico I will be sure to log in to Steam and select Go Offline.  Just in case.  So it's not completely worthless.  But you do have to plan ahead if you are going to have any unexpected lack of internet connection and want to play any Steam games.

Am I the only one that think that is not sufficient?

In my case, It just tried to log into steam for a few minutes, and then just finally asked if I wanted to start in Offline mode.

I said yes, and presto, single player goodness.

Oh and to edit, I tried Zombie Panic tonight.

It was hella fun, with some teamwork, you could dominate servers...

Ah, I didn't get that.  I tried several times, and it just kept trying and trying and never gave me any options like that.  I wonder if they disabled something?

When did you try that?

It was working for me a month and a half ago or so.

TPR is crazy. . .  Just for grins, I unplugged my Network cord.  I had no connection to the Internet.  I started Steam.  It applied the update that was downloaded last time I was on.  It said that the Network wasn't available and asked if I wanted to go into offline mode.  I said yes.  It then loaded my Steam window and I selected HL2:Ep1 from the list.  It loaded and worked fine.  Other than waiting for Steam to timeout and see there was no Network connection, I didn't see any differences.  So, unless there was an update to offline mode in the update that was just applied. . . TPR is crazy. . .

About a month ago, my son was playing CS in offline mode against a bunch of bots.  So, it was working for him as long as a month ago as well.

Huh.  Then I retract my complaint and replace it with confusion.  I'll try it again tonight myself and see what happens.

Did you guys see that someone is creating bots for TF2? I guess they already have the demo and maybe the heavy. They said the spy was going to be the hardest class to get working properly.

I thought I saw TF2 bots long ago.

I know they were all over Quake Wars.
