Anyone ever played it?  That article that was posted made me look at it.  I've heard of it, and may have even hit the website before.  But, when I saw there was real money attached to the virtual world, it sparked my interest.  One, because I can make money playing it.  Two, when real money is involved, people tend to value their stuff more and play differently.  I like games with consequences.  And what's more consequential than real money?  I did some research:

You are a person in a ship.  You don't wander around space ports or planets.  You are in a ship at all times.  You can own as many ships as you want.  All are customizable and stuff.  Many different kinds to choose from.  If your ship is destroyed during combat, your ship is gone.  If you have another, you can go hop in it.  If you don't, you get a free clunker of a ship to start over with.  You have a personal hanger (bank).  People can't steal from it, so, I guess it's like UO's bank.  You can buy insurance for your ship.  Reimbursment if you lose you ship depends on the premiums you are paying.  Once your ship is destroyed, you are in a 'goo pod' and you pilot that back to your hanger to get your backup ship.  If you are killed while in your goo, you die.  If you bought a clone, then, you become that clone and have the skills, etc you had when you cloned.  If you don't have a clone, then, you loose stats.  When a ship is destroyed, the cargo floats and can be captured by anyone.  Insurance does not cover cargo.  Ship only.  So, concequences to death.  Lose your ship, and possibly skills.  And you get to loot your kills, assuming they were carrying loot.  You can abandone ships.  If you find one, you can dump the one you are in and take the other one.
You gain skills by buying skill packs.  Skill packs work like they do in The Matrix.  They are implanted.  Some skills are learned in an hour.  Others take days.  So, there is no macroing of skills.  You learn once you buy the pack even if you are logged off.  The ships/weapons/etc you can use are based on your skills.  There is no skill limit.  You can max out in everything if you want.  Unlikely due to cost/time and stuff.
There are safe area, and not safe areas.  The big money is in the not safe areas.
Crimes change your 'status'.  Bad status and you can't go certain places and you are attacked by police.  There are different factions.  You attack one, and you lose points.  Their enemy gives you points.  The more faction points you have, the better stuff that faction will give you access to.
Didn't get into player vendors and such.  I'm assuming it's there if you can make a living without combat.
Combat isn't 'fly and shoot X-Wing vs Tie' style.  It's 'tactical'.  Don't know much beyone that.  Could by like SWG.  You pick a target, then the dice are rolled based on your attack abilities, their defence abilities and you hit if the dice are high enough.  You don't aim and shoot.  The PC does.

Over all, the true concequences of death are VERY appealing to me.  Oh, and the fact that I can sell stuff for cash does too.

There's a 30 day free trial.  I'm coming off some major projects and I'm looking to have a lot of free time.  Perfect time for a new addiction.  Anyone tried it?  Interested in trying it?

People are paying $1000+ for accounts.  Ebay has tons of eve auctions.  Most for money.

Nothing like a goddamned frothing-at-the-mouth, rabid fan base to attract new customers.

Much like Shadowbane was a couple years before it came out.

Let me know how it is and if you like it, I'll do the 30 day trial.

Actually, let me know when you start, maybe I'll join you.

I'm not big on the idea of no safe area though. What if I was playing from work and had to get up and leave quickly?

Wasn't mbilderback discussing the merits of this game a couple months back?

I do, however, find it intriguing that there's no ceiling on skillpoints & you learn even when you're offline.  There's absolutely no way to get better at something simply by doing it more?  Like can you become a better shot if you shoot a lot or is it merely bought skillpoints learned over time?  & what rate, linear, exponential?  If you have a billion skillpoints already, do you learn just as fast as someone w\ ten skillpoints?

My friend was talking about his brother selling a character (in a different game) for $600 the other day.  His father-in-law was really curious about that, but he was remarkebly accepting.
He said something like, "People pay $1,500 for a weekend golf getaway, or they blow more than that on a trip to Vegas.  Why not pay $1,500 for a game character that'll give you months of enjoyment?"

I bet you can make more money playing online poker than you could selling characters though.

Only if you're not getting cheated.

I know of people who work together and cheat others out of cash on online poker sites.

Leisher:  There is a safe area.  You can choose to leave it though.  I think there are varrying degrees of security in various areas.

Malcolm: No idea.  I only read the FAQ.  I get the impression that the higher you go in any particular skill area, the more expensive and longer it takes to learn it.  So, level one for everyone takes 1 hour.  Level 5 takes two weeks.  Or something like that.

Speaking of skill kit things, they are all player researched and created.

Now, that's interesting.
