Yeah.  Installing it took about an hour, then so far I can't get it to launch past the initial splash screen.

Dig this in the FAQ's:

My game crashes/freezes whilst loading.

 Question
 My game crashes/freezes whilst loading.

 Answer
This can be caused by a few different things, but is usually linked to programs running in the background that conflict with the game, or miscommunication between the game and your video and/or sound card.

To end background processes in Windows 98/ME:

Press and hold Ctrl, Alt and Delete, then release the keys.  This will in turn bring up a window called "Close Programs".
The only two applications that you want listed here before running or installing the game are "explorer" and "systray". Close all other programs by double-clicking on them.
You will need to repeat this process after closing each application. Some applications may take multiple times before closing.

To end background processes in Windows XP:

Press and hold Ctrl, Alt and Delete, then release the keys.
Choose to bring up the Task Manager (if it is not automatic).
Click on the Processes tab.
Click on the column heading called User Name (this will organize the list).
Now check for your user name or the word owner in the User Name list.
For every item next to that name (EXCEPT FOR EXPLORER.EXE and TASKMGR.EXE) click on it, click on End Process, and then click on Yes.
When only EXPLORER.EXE and TASKMGR.EXE are left next to your user name, close the window.

Now try running the game.  If you still crash or freeze at the loading screen you can try adding switches to the shortcut to verify if it is an issue with the drivers for your video or sound card.

Right-click on The Sims 2 icon on your desktop and choose Properties.
Click with your mouse at the end of the highlighted Target line.  This should put your cursor at the end of the line and cause the line to no longer be highlighted.
Add a space and then type '-w' without the quotes.
Add another space and then type '-nosound' without the quotes.
click Apply and then OK.
Double-click on the icon to start the game.  The game should now be in a window and should not have sound.  If this remedies your issue, you will need to update your video and sound card drivers in order to play without the switches.  You can do this at your PC or card manufacturer's website.

If the crash/freeze still occurs, you should verify that you meet system requirements.  If you meet the minimum requirements and are still experiencing the issue, you may consider a complete uninstall and reinstall of the game.

Manually uninstalling The Sims 2 is a two part process.  You must remove the game folders as well as the game's registry entries.

To remove all of the game folders:

Open your My Documents folder.
Open the EA Games folder.
Right-click on The Sims 2 folder and choose Delete.
A Confirm Folder Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
When the folder is finished deleting, close the window.
Open My Computer.
Open your harddrive (by default this is C:).
Open the Program Files folder.
Open the EA Games folder.
Right-click on The Sims 2 folder and choose Delete.
A Confirm Folder Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
When the folder is finished deleting, close the window.
Right-click on your Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.

Now you can remove the registry keys for the game.

Click on Start and then click on Run...
In the text line type 'regedit' without quotes, then click OK.
click on File and then Export...
Choose a location and name for the file (this will be your backup registry file).
Click Save.

The next steps will all be performed in the left pane of the Registry Editor window.

Click on the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click on the + next to SOFTWARE
Click on the + next to EA GAMES
Right-click on The Sims 2 folder and choose Delete.
A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
Click on the + next to Electronic Arts
Click on the + next to EA GAMES
Right-click on The Sims 2 and choose Delete.
A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
Click on the + next to Microsoft.
Click on the + next to Windows.
Click on the + next to Current Version.
Click on the + next to Uninstall.
If you have the CD edition, right-click on the the Key named {8AB8D458-939E-403F-0097-9BA1C1F013D5} and choose Delete.
If you have the DVD edition, right-click on the Key named {40C03514-89C3-41BA-0090-3B440256DB87} and choose Delete.
If you have the UK/European CD edition, right click on the Key named {6E7DD182-9FC6-4651-0095-2E666CC6AF35} and choose Delete.
A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.

The Sims 2 has now been completely removed from your system.  You may now choose to reinstall the game.

Pretty new system.  Fresh loaded.  Up to date drivers.  And apparently it isn't compatible with antivirus pgms and they want me to edit the registry now.

What a piece of shit.

This is more ammo for the front page post I'm mulling about doing about how PC game makers are pushing their customers towards consoles.

Which, thinking about it, may be their goal...

Loaded it twice, in all.  The second installation took an hour and 10 minutes, off 4 cd's.  Fairly new, fast system.

Wow my copy of the game, cds reside on my hard drive, took like less than half that time and I have an older machine.  I blame the publishers putting all the anti pirate stuff on their cds that end up screwing / slowing down many machines hardware.  As far as the registry stuff... yeah thats fucked up.  The installer put that crap there it should take the crap out, just one reason windows has to be reinstalled fresh so damn often, lazy ass programers.

I actually have to go into winxp processes and end a few things before the game will launch.

Shit of the bull.

Ok, I need to be honest, here...

I had a hunch, and bought her a new CD drive.  Cleared all the problems up, for some reason.

I was able to dig and glean information about the code... when the splash screen is up, the game is verfying it is a valid cd in the drive.  It was getting stuck at the splash screen...

so...

I figured maybe the drive was getting flaky.  CD drives are cheap enough that I could afford to expermint.  Now the game works without shutting a bunch of stuff down.

Cool, you really should go to gamecopyworld.com and get yourself a no-cd crack and be done with cd verifying.

If you have a registered copy of Sims 2, they are shutting down support for it and they are giving you a free upgrade to all expansion packs.

If you have a registered copy of "The Sims 2" you should also be ashamed.

I assume your wife can't handle a new PC, so it's kind of deadlocked?  EDIT: Come to think of it, if it's for a Sims upgrade, don't get a new machine.  Sacrilege.

If all she's going to do is play the Sims, you shouldn't even waste a computer on her.  Get her a Mac or some other electronic device with training wheels.

I didn't say I was going to get her a new computer... I said she would be getting an upgrade.  Which means I get a new computer, and she gets my current one.

I used to play the Sims titles while watching TV because you didn't have to really think about it.
