Back in 2012 or 2013 I picked up NBA2K12. Mainly because it was recommended. Normally I don't give a fuck about the NBA, but I wanted a basketball game, and there isn't one for the NCAA. Anyway, I loved the career mode which lets you build your own player and take him through a career. Although, I admittedly played only one season which saw me get drafted by the Celtics and win the title.

Recently, NBA2K14 was on sale in the Steam store, and wanting a good sports game after playing a game of Madden each Monday night prior to poker league, I grabbed it.

I started career mode, and was having fun playing for the Bulls who drafted me at #18. That is until the week before the All-Star Game. This is about 40 games into the season. My team had a "key game", and no matter the result, during the post-game press conference I was told I was selected to the rookie all-star team. After that press conference the game would crash to the desktop with no errors shown. I tried again. Fail. I tried again. Fail.

I updated all my video drivers and ensured Windows updates were up to date. I tried again. Fail. I looked into Steam and their website for updates. Nothing.

So I sent off an email to 2K support:
QUOTE
I'm in My Career mode, and I'm almost halfway through my rookie season. I have two games to go before the All Star break. The game has worked fine up to this point. However, I play this specific game, which happens to be a key game, and after the post game press conference, where they tell me I made the Rookie All Star game, the game crashes to the desktop. No error codes are given.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. Everything is updated including video drivers. I have tried running it as an Administrator.
I've played this game 5 times already, only to crash after every attempt. Help.

They responded:

Great! I do what they ask, and send this:
QUOTE
Files from Step #1 and #2 attached as requested.
No screenshot because the game simply crashes to the desktop and gives no error message.

Twelve days later, I get the following response:

I was irritated, and responded:

You might want to actually review the case before sending out the same email that was already sent to me once. Look above. I already responded to it.

That got their attention and to their credit, they apologize. However, look at their next "solution":
QUOTE
Hello Leisherentry,

We are very sorry about sending you repeat emails.

Thank you for sending us your DxDiag and MSinfo.

We would like to have you try the following troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issues you are experiencing.

Ensure that you have Administrator privileges on the computer you are trying to run the game on.

Ensure that all non-essential USB devices are disconnected from the computer for the purposes of troubleshooting. This could include (but isn't limited to): game controllers, flight-sticks, etc

Update your video and sound drivers (refer to manufacturer’s website)

Disable Background Applications
It is strongly recommended to turn off all background applications when running graphically intensive programs. Many applications can cause errors such as GPFs, color scrambling, loss of sound effects or music, etc. Taking a minute to turn off these applications can save you the trouble of rebooting later. Background applications include such things as System Agent, Norton Utilities, Internet chat utilities, virus checkers and screen savers. Crash guard programs such as First Aid for Windows can also cause problems.

Windows XP
1. Click Start, then Run
2. In the Open: box, type msconfig. Click OK
3. On the General Tab, click the Selective Startup option.

4. Uncheck the option to Load Startup Items.
5. Click Apply and Close.
6. Answer Yes to Restart Windows.

Windows Vista / Windows 7
1. Click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
2. Click on Start Search
3. Type in msconfig and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
4. Click the Continue button if the message "Windows needs your permission to continue"

appears. If this message does not appear, please continue to step 5.
5. On the General Tab, choose Selective Startup.

6. Uncheck the option to Load startup items.
7. Click Apply, then Ok, and restart the system when prompted.

Reinstall Direct X Updates
It is possible that the version of Direct X running on your computer is encountering errors with the game you are trying to play. If this is the case, we advise reinstalling Direct X. The latest version of Direct X can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

Disable SLI/CrossFireX
Many games do not support either the SLI or CrossFireX features of Nvidia or ATI video cards. It is advised to disable SLI/CrossFireX if you are running two or more video cards in the same computer when encountering issues. Please refer to manufacturer’s website for more details on how to enable/disable this feature.

Lower Sound Acceleration

Windows XP
1. Login to the machine as the Administrator user.
2. Go to Start, then Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Sound and Audio Devices icon.
4. Click the Audio tab.
5. In the Sound Playback section, click the Advanced button.
6. Click the Performance tab.
7. Move the slider for Hardware Acceleration back 2 notches to the left to the Basic setting.

Windows Vista/7/8
1. Press Windows + R to bring up the run box
2. Type "control panel" without quotes, press ENTER.
3. Goto Hardware and Sound > Sound
4. Pick your sound device that is set as default
5. click Properties.
6. Go to the Advanced tab
7. Set "Default Format" to 44.1khz 16bit.
8. Click Apply and then click OK to accept the new setting and close the dialog box.
9. Click OK to close the Display Properties dialog box.
10. Restart Windows.

Verifying the integrity of the game cache (only applicable if you have the Steam version of the game)
Right click on the game in the Steam library and select Properties
Navigate to the "Local Files" tab
Click "Verify integrity of game cache"

Uninstall and Reinstall the game completely.
There is a possibility that some of the files which are installed during the setup process are incomplete or corrupted. Try uninstalling the game completely and reinstalling it under its default or express settings.

If none of the above troubleshooting resolves the issue, please contact us back for further troubleshooting with an updated DXDiag and MSInfo.

Best Regards,

Rodney_K

*sigh*

Meanwhile, while they're blaming everything but their product, console users are reporting the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.

Fuck you 2K. Not because of the problem. Hey, shit happens. No, fuck you for trying to assign me busy work when you KNOW the problem isn't my system, but your code.

I just sent my latest response:
QUOTE
Rodney,

I am the admin. No non-essential devices are hooked up. All my drivers are updated regularly. I have disabled everything the start tab of msconfig out of habit long before I played your game. I have also verified the integrity of the game through Steam.

Listen, I get that troubleshooting 101 is to ensure nothing else is causing the issue, but console users are having the same problem that I am: NBA2K14 career mode crashs (I added the hyperlink to the google search from my earlier post.)

So I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the problem is more than likely in your game's code, and not something else on my system. After all, I successfully played around 40 other games in the season without any issues. So, can we please cut to the chase, and end the "busy work"?

I noticed last night that the version of my game is 1.0.0. I also noticed in that google search that you guys might know what's wrong. Any word on when a patch might drop to resolve the issue for those of us whose career mode keeps crashing?

Thanks!

2K Technical Support

Morons.

On top of that I just found another bug. The game just skipped two games all by itself. My player's stats were shit in those games, and I got no skill points for playing in them. Skill points are used to upgrade your character, so they're kind of important.

My response:
QUOTE
Michael,

Please view the history of the problem. I've already provided that stuff, and this is the third time it's been requested.

On top of the original issue, which still hasn't been resolved and which is a known bug on console versions too, I just experienced the game skipping bug. In a new career mode, I got done playing a game, and when it returned to the Career Mode home screen it had skipped my time line forward two games. I was awarded no skill points for those games despite having stats assigned to me in the box scores for those games. That means the AI thinks I played in them. There is no way to go back in time and play those games over either. Again, this is apparently another issue for other users as well. I discovered that with a quick Google search.

As stated to the previous tech support rep, my version of the game is still 1.0.0. Are there any plans for patches to fix these issues?

Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend buying any 2K games as they not only don't support their games after release, but their customer service sucks.

I'll bet you a dollar that they have absolutely NO mechanism in place for taking tech support past level 1, much less dealing with a consumer with a tech background.  You are 1 in 10k and just not worth spending the money on to support.

I think they're simply managed poorly.

They just announced the 5th patch for the PS4 version of NBA2k14. The problem is this game is out for the PC, X-Box One, 360, and PS3 too.

They also have a banner ad on their site already promoting NBA2k15.

I have a feeling they run a full team to create a game, and then a skeleton crew to patch things and support a released game. It's clear which version they consider the highest profile. 5th patch for the PS4, not a single one for the PC.

2K distributes some good games like Bioshock, Borderlands, the upcoming Evolve, but here's the thing: They're developed by other companies.

I think 2K Sports is perhaps their in house development wing.

2K is starting to look like a mini-EA.

My latest response:
QUOTE
I sent a response and updated files on Thursday only to find you guys closed my case three days later claiming I haven't responded. (For fun, I'm adding them again.) After 4 "support reps" who never got past troubleshooting step #1, I'm not sure if this is incompetence or an EA level of disdain for one's own customers.

Even IF you never received the email, do you not have a quality process over there? Anyone can look at the thread and see the problems haven't been resolved.

It's just so insulting to be sent the same form letter over and over, wait days for a response, and each time be asked to jump through hoops when you KNOW the problems are in your code. Yes, I'm calling Daniel M. a liar. Google and Steam reviews back me up. You guys and gals at 2K are aware of those things, yes?

I would respect you more if you just came out and admitted that you have no plans to patch NBA2K14 for the PC because you don't think the PC market is worth the cost, and you're just hoping folks get over the bugs and buy NBA2K15. I'd think it was a crappy move, but I'd respect the honesty more than you wasting my time hoping for an actual resolution.

So I hope you're reading this Fifth 2K Support person. I don't want a form letter asking for files. In fact, if you're level one, just go ahead and escalate this now (something promised two reps ago...). I simply want some truth.

Are there any plans to patch the issues your PC consumers are experiencing? (That just happen to be the same issues the consoles versions are experiencing...)

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't getting some weird pleasure out of watching this clusterfuck unfold.
