http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/
Somewhere i have about 6,000 Magic: The Gathering cards laying around the house just gathering dust. But i have nobody to play with nor do i have the patience or desire to dig through all of those just to make a deck. Now i don't have to!
Hearthstone is a collectable card game that plays and feels much like M:TG, but plays alot faster. I own one of the PC versions of M:TG and its ok, you can't play against other people, only AI. Kinda stupid when it comes to a game like this. This game seems to do it right.
If you are familiar with M:TG then this game will be super easy to learn. If not, its still easy to learn but you may not have the board control concept down and may not know the most effiecient way to spend your mana each turn.
First thing you do is pick a Hero that you wanna play with. There are quite a few like Mage, Hunter, Palidin, Druid ect.. Each of these have thier own abilities they bring to the table. You only start with one and you have to unlock the others by playing against the AI (i think). You start with 2-3 cards and one mana crystal. Each round you draw a card and gain a new mana crystal. There are no separate land cards so you don't have to decide what colors to play with or be screwed because you didnt draw a mana card. As each turn goes you lay down your creatures and make your attacks. You can do this with either the creatures that are on the board or with direct damage cards (like fireball). Your Hero can actually do many different things too so this brings a new twist to the M:TG classic game style. They even have special cards that are accociated with them so each deck will have its own feel and gameplay. You keep going round by round doing this untill one of you are dead. Pretty simple and pretty fun.
One big difference from M:TG is that you can only cast card spells on your turn, so there are no instants or interrupts. But you don't feel like its cheap because so many of the creature cards have abilities attached to them that trigger when they are supposed to. But everything that you would want in a CCG is there. You gain gold from playing and can use that to buy new packs of cards. With these packs you can build your own decks to your hearts desire. Each deck consists of 30 cards, no more, no less. With a max of 2 of the same card in any given deck. This is good because you don't have to put land cards in there and it keeps the games going pretty fast.
I have only played through the begging of the game where you are given a hero and play against AI to get you familiar with the game. But i can see that there are PvP games and a ranking system of some sort. There is even some kind of tournement system you can get into. I don't know much about the ranking and tourney stuff yet, but i know its there.
Very fun game that is made by Blizzard so its funded really well. Yes there are microtransactions, but from what i have learned they made sure it wasn't a pay to win type game cause that would just break a game like this. Its been in closed beta for many months now and it just came to open beta, but its free!! So if anyone is interested in a game like this i suggest to download it. Games go really fast maybe 5-10 mins so its a good time killer while waiting for others.

First of all, I had NO idea that you were into M:tG, and I've known you for the better part of two decades now.
Secondly, you know who started talking about M:tG to me two nights ago? Cognito. He was typing it up in chat, and mentioned that it's huge at his college. Asked if I was into it, which I'm not.
However, if you're looking for company in Hearthstone, you might want to give him a heads up.

When I was in Tokyo on business back in 1999 we were in a big, fancy hotel. In the course of our bar hopping, we went to the big, fancy hotel next door, and the lobby was filled with American teenagers playing M:tG. Turns out the world championships were being held there that week.

yeah, i guess i never talked about it much cause i only played it with a small group of people many years ago now. I haven't even opened that box of cards in prolly 10 years. And i never would hear other people talk about the game, so i figured that was just some deep seeded inner nerd game that i always liked but never really got to play.
As far as Cognito and having friends in the game.. Well, i think there is a friends list for the game and you could prolly duo each other. But i think that this game is better to just build your decks on your own and jump into ranked games and PvP and see how i do. You can't speak to the other guy so there is no assholes you will ever have to deal with. I think all you can do is just e-motes.

I've got a confession.. I've been playing this game a lot lately. Â Not that I don't wanna play MW:O, but I just wanted to try something else out and I'm addicted to it.
The best part of it is you can now play it on an iPad. Â I usually HATE mobile games, I mean I don't even think about downloading them, they all suck. Â But this isn't mobile, its the full PC game that you can play on mobile. Â You can link your account and have all the cards and progress that you have from the PC version right there.
Not trying to get people sucked into this game because I don't want the heat from people about getting them into a game and just leave them high and dry. Â In fact I don't think anyone here even likes CCG games like Magic the Gathering so it's prolly a good thing. Â But this game is really fun and really deep even though its a simplified version of M:TG.

I play lots of other games while also playing MW:O. You've got to mix things up or shit gets stale, ala LoL.
In fact, I've been jonesing to play some Payday, but Cake's disappearance is nixing that. I'm waiting for Gordo to get his boxed version of Homeworld so he can kick my ass. I still have Supreme Commander installed on my system (although I'm guessing I can remove that at this point). Plus, I'm currently deciding what single player game I'll knock out next (Oblivion?).
Hell, I'm even researching new MMORPGs and continuing to watch Rust closely. ArchAge might be run by greedy jackasses, but I still enjoyed playing it.
Point being, I just don't want to get locked into one game again. Every night logging on and feeling obligated to play one specific game over and over and over. Nor do I want anyone else to feel like that.
But yeah, you'd never get me into Hearthstone. I don't dig the card games.

I did some Rust this past weekend. It has come a long, long way and is really coming around towards their vision.
If anyone wants to run a fort over a weekend on a busy server like we did in early rust - count me in!
on topic: I used to play MTG like a fiend, as recently as 4-5 years ago. Not anymore, all my old MTG buddies did try to get me to play Hearthstone though

TPR, did you know there is an expansion coming out in August? Â The Grand Tournament is a 132 card set with a new mechanic called "inspire". Â
Also, since you are an arena player you will have a 1 in 3 chance to get TGT packs and not just GvG packs. Â Personally I've been saving my gold for the last few weeks so I can buy some TGT cards when they are released, I believe I have about 1,000 gold right now.

The boxed version is expensive but comes with a huge model of the Mothership so that's cool. 2.  I could do some co-op SupCom against AI, or possibly pvp................................. Sup Com ftw

Just let me know what I need to have loaded.
August is looking much better in terms of my Carolina trips, so I'll actually be home. Although, once the school year starts I will fall back into my normal gaming routines.

TGT expansion releases sometime today.
TPR, have you been saving up your gold? I believe I have enough saved up to open 15-20 packs. Let me know what epics or legendary cards you receive, if any.

I have, but not on purpose. I've just been enjoying the Tavern Brawls enough not to care to bother going into the Arena.
I think I have about 1800 saved up currently.

opened 15 packs.. No legendary cards but got 5 epics I think, one was even gold. Didn't seem like they were the best cards but sometimes the commons end up being the most useful cards anyways.
A friend of mine also opened 15 packs and didn't get one epic, so i did better than him i guess.
