Just finished it. Was that the end of the HL2 series? Or does the story continue in another episode? I see "Lost Coast", but is that just from the soldier's point of view or something? Or is that the next chapter?

Episode 3 is being worked on. Should be out June of 2007.
It will end the Alex and Dog part of the story(supposedly) but Gorden Freeman and the G-man will continue on.

Where did you get that information? (And obviously the year is wrong.)
Last time I heard anything about Ep3, it was that no information had been released yet.

The original plan was for three episodes. One and two came out pretty quickly, and I believe were developed outside of Valve(?). Episode 3 is being developed by Valve.
The word is that Episode 3 hasn't come out yet because they're developing it alongside Half-Life 3. That's just rumor though. Not much of a stretch to believe it's true considering the money the Half-Life series has made. A sequel is a no brainer.

Gabe Newell. That was the original release date and it was going to be out within a year of the first episodes release. The reason Valve went with the Episode format is they said they would be able to avoid the long waits like they have between full games and it would keep Half Life in the public eye more.
Episode 3 is suppose to have a deaf character in it and and some new AI that is a huge improvement for Alex and Dog. Back when there were all the canceling Episode 3 and moving on to HL3 and the women from portal being Alex's mom rumors Newell said that none of that was happening because they need to finish Alex's and Dog's story.

I am pretty sure Valve made them in house but it wasn't the same people who worked on HL2. I think there was over a year between the two which is fast for Valve but way over their original 3-4 months between games schedule.
QUOTE A sequel is a no brainer.
Don't remember everything word for word but Newell said there was more to the HL universe beyond Episode 3 because we still won't know anything about the G-man. Just my speculation but even if Episode 3 ends with Gordon forcing the Combine off earth they still aren't defeated so there is going to have to be the mandatory visit to the alien homeworld to defeat them so they never bother us again. Portal and Aperture are both suppose to tie in at some point too.

Aperture Technologies was already tied in during Ep:2, with that ship frozen in the ice... and the powerpoint demonstration we see briefly talking about them, corporate espionage-style.

As of August 14th, 2009, Gabe stated that they're still working on it, but didn't give any other details.
Hints do seem to indicate that something involving sign language might be a part of HL2:Ep3, but it could be as simple as Alyx communicating with Dog.
I've googled it and throughout the development cycle, 2010 is the year brought up as when the game would most likely be released. One of the Valve folks also said in 2008 that HL2:Ep3 is the most ambitious game they've ever worked on.
I doubt this will be the "final" story involving Alyx and Dog. They've become too popular, like Barney.
Oh, and Cake, the Lost Coast is a level the developers made to show of their engine. There is some gameplay, but it's more about hearing the "director's commentary" as you go through the level. It doesn't take too long, and it is interesting.

I'm not saying it is canceled or the team went on sabbatical or anything, just that when cakedaddy asked went Episode 3 was going to come out I just mention Valves loose original release date. My way of saying "No one has a clue." Kind of like if you look inside your Diablo(maybe Hellfire) jewel case it will tell you to look for Diablo II in the spring of 1998 and they didn't come close to hitting that date.
"When does Diablo 2 come out?" "In 1998."
The original idea for going to the Episodes was to have small games that had a tighter focus and would have a short turnaround. Episodes 1 & 2 were developed at the same time and 2 was suppose to follow 4-6 months later with 3 being a bit longer since it wasn't being worked on at that time. Valve said they wanted to avoid the 6 year wait for a complete game.

Since the original idea of the Episodes things have evolved. It stands to reason that in 2008 they would change the hopeful release date since 2008 was past their original goal. The games have gone from being parts of a whole to big ambitious projects in the case of episode 3.

It could be but each Episode has a theme. The AI for 1, wide open spaces to be different from the narrow hallways of the previous games for 2 and the deaf character and communication keeps coming up in rumors and in talk from Valve so that seems to be a good a theme as anything else.
Not saying I believe they will kill Alyx and Dog off or you will never see them again just relaying what Newell has said. When the canceling Episode 3 rumors were flying around he said that wasn't happening because they had to finish their story. I don't remember exactly who he told it to it was a while ago but I think it was Adam Sessler or that Geoff Knightly guy on SpikeTV.
Also said that it is not an older Alyx that is the test subject in Portal. Something was mentioned about portal being before the episodes in the time line which would make her too young and so then the rumor was it was Alyxs mother and she didn't die earlier but Valve said that it was not her mother either.

Speaking of which, I still have extra copies of HL2 and HL2:Ep1 if anyone wants them.

I haven't done episode 1 or 2 yet. Loved the original though.
