I think I'm ready to give UO a try.  Should I play a free server (and if so which one) or go ahead and pay to play the real deal?  Anything I should know before I get into UO?

Relevant info: I'm not into PvP nor even combat in general, I'll most likely do all the other stuff there is to do in UO ... whatever that might be.  But then I also like screwing with people, so maybe I'll PvP after all.  No idea.

Even if you don't PVP, the existence of PVP makes the reward of everything else that much sweeter.

If you play the official UO servers, you may as well play Everquest instead.  I'd recommend the last server we played for 10 minutes (NOT Metropolis).  Defiance?

Since he's not all about the PvP, and more into the 'checking everything out', I'd go with a different server than Defiance.  Defiance has about 50% of the content turned off to match what the game was 5 years ago more closely.  I couldn't even begin to tell you which server to play that would have all the content turned on, but I'm sure there is a free server you could play that would give it to you.  There are also alot of free servers with custom stuff that adds/changes content.  Again, no solid recommendations though.  I would sort the list of servers by population, and go from there.  Because even though you may not want to spend any time with other people, you'll still need them to really experience what the game has to offer.  Much of the fun of the game was the player based economy.  I would highly recommend a free server before an EA pay server.  You will get most of the content at no cost.  If you like it, then try a real server cause there will be more people, and latest content, etc.  But try it before you buy it cause you can.

Is there such a list somewhere of UO servers?

Find and download "UO Gateway," which is a generic server-launcher/accesser for 99% of the free servers.  There you can sort by server population and features, and there are usually links to the servers' home pages.

PS - Look for a server with at least 150 minimum-average-population online.  200 would be better.

In my opinion.

Some have several hundred on at a time, and may actually be what you're looking for.

Cool, thanks!

You'll also need the UO client... available for download at various places.

And if you can't find it I know an unofficial spot to find it.

You are required to download it from EA's sight now.  It's illegal to host it.  Free server sites all have links to the EA download sight.  Getting it should be easy and fast.

Well, I suck at this game so far.  Let's see, I started a blacksmith, got lost in the woods outside Trinsic, killed a snake, tamed three chickens, two dogs, and a cat, and ended up getting killed by a harpy and walking to Briton.  Where I finally found a forge and couldn't figure out how to use it.

So now I'm off to find some sort of beginners guide online.  Something for the really clueless.  :)

Okay, so after reading up a bit I decided to venture out in search of ore.  About five seconds after reading "You are no longer under the protection of the guards" somebody one-shotted me and teabagged my corpse.  Since then I've been running around for about an hour trying to find a damn healer.  I can't seem to find anything online about where to find one.  This ghost thing is getting old.  Any advice?

Oh, I'm in that Britania Town place.

So, after being stripped clean of my ore, ingots, armor, gold, and weapons five times now, my next question is how do you keep from being constantly ganked by GM Badasses?  Do I have to GM Baddassery myself, or is there something else to be done?

I like playing PvP games, but there are limits to the number of times I liked to be ganked in a short period of time.

EDIT: And I gotta say, it's not very bright of the gankers.  It's like overfishing a pond: too many ganks too often, and there won't be any more newbies to gank.

Go to Cove... you can mine and smith all in a town guard zone.

Unless your server has goofy rules.

If Cove is crowded, Delucia.  Same thing.

I went to a carebear server.  Actually, the carebeariest of carebear servers.  When you first log on a GM greets you, gives you a beetle and a ton of gold, and tells you all about their wonderful server.  And I think everyone is singing cumbaya around Brit Bank.

It'll get old, but for now I might as well play there while I learn how the game works.

Badly.  Very, very badly.

Oh, I'm taking everything I learn with an enormous grain of salt, don't worry.  I'm not the type that's stupid enough to think that just because hanging out at Cafe Dumonde on the square is nice and fun that that means it's safe to wander around the 6th District at night alone and unarmed.

Funny, this is exactly the way UO was back in 1998-1999 when I started playing.  Either you got good at mining spots that were in guard zones or very good at running and hiding, or you were fresh meat who got ganked regularly.  I only got ganked a few times before I figured it out.  I miss pre UO:R sometimes.
