Can't give homes away.

They're about to lose a lot of casino business too as Ohio looks to pass "Issue 3" which means casinos for Toledo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus. (Apparently, the Toledo one will be 5 minutes from my office.)

Things look pretty bleak in Detroit.

17.3% unemployment, highest in the nation.

A friend of mine was visiting family, and had a Friday evening flight out of DTW.  Was like "well, I guess we better get going to avoid rush hour traffic"  His Father-in-law said "We dont have rush hour any more"

Saw the "Weren't we just" thread and it reminded me about the latest news out of Detroit, and maybe Cake can fill in more details...

Anyway, the mayor plans to shrink the city. He wants to evict people from their homes and tell them to move to other parts of Detroit if their area is sparsely populated. Essentially, he's planning on centralizing the population, and then completely ignoring the abandoned part. This may involve shrinking the actual city limits.

The idea is that it'll save Detroit a lot of money, and help the city begin to recover.

It's like the opposite of the thread I linked. Instead of evicting folks for private business development, they're evicting folks because nobody wants to live there...

I think these folks should be given the option to stay where they are if they don't want to move. If Detroit loses citizens, then so be it. These people are supposed to be "free", let them decide if they need the services you provide or if they can do without them.

On one hand, yeah, the citizens should probably be allowed to choose.  On the other hand, it's Detroit.  That place is a hole & anything that results in less Detroit is something I'll consider.

Hmmm... America 2.0 rises out of the ghetto of Detroit?  They remove the people, we get to be our own independent state?

That's a bit more of a fixer-upper than we were planning for.  The "buy a tropical island" idea sounds better.

You mean people are going to riot, commit crimes, and disturb the halcyon life that is urban Detroit?  Wow, wonder if anyone'll notice.

QUOTE
“Maybe we won’t take it to the level of the ’60s riots, but this thing is escalating,” Williams said.

Christ on a crutch.  Somewhere, Dr. King is rolling over in his grave trying to figure out how what the fuck you're doing harkens back to the days of his marches.

QUOTE
“Obviously [Orr] is a black proxy for the governor,” Williams said. “Detroit is 84 percent African-American, and this is an obvious opportunity for Snyder to utilize this man as an Uncle Tom, quite frankly.”

Yep, nothing racist about that remark.
