Sugar, yeah tax the hell out of it.  It's not like we've ever gone to war over people taxing our goods unjustly.

QUOTE
"We can raise much-needed dollars while likely reducing obesity prevalence, which is a major driver of health care costs, the paper states. "Ultimately the government needs to raise more money to cover the deficit, and in terms of ways of raising that revenue, a tax on sugar sweetened beverages is really a no-brainer."

You can replace the bold part w\ various other consequences-drugs combos & suddenly your argument becomes wrong.  How curious.

Sugar Act.

What's funny is that today we heavily subsidize sugar production ($61 million is 2004).  So now we're going to throw money at it on one end, and take money from it on the other.

I've been saying this for at least a decade: when the government gets into the health care bidness, it will start dictating to us how we live and eat.

I was just coming here to post/comment on this.

We spend BILLIONS of dollars annually to foster corn production, then want to tax it back when it's used to sweeten drinks?

It's like the only thing they know is how to make more laws and bullshit, instead of getting rid of any.

I got a boss that's the same way.  If something's wrong, it's always because there aren't enough rules in place.

That tends to be the nature of those in charge.  Unless some unique circumstances occur.  If we had to fight a Revolutionary War every fifty years or so, it'd go a long way towards straightening out people's minds.  We duked it out w\ John Bull for a few years specifically because of shyte like this.  The founding fathers remembered all too well what it was like to be treated no better than walking ATMs by their gov't.

Kind of like tobacco.

Oh come now, that's just absurd.  I mean, they gave that bailout money to the banks and car companies, and they didn't try to meddle in THOSE companies' decisions, did they?

HOWEVER.  Don't eat sugar, kids.  Sugar is what makes you fat.

Seriously.  I've lost 30 pounds since I cut back on sugar, while at the same time ramping UP my consumption of meat and fat.

Calling it.  They'll start taxing things like this just as they do with booze and tobacco.  Give it a decade.

So let's see.  On the one hand poor people are getting fatter because they can only afford cheap foods, most of which is heavily processed and high in sugar and fat.  So let's tax the only food that poor people can afford so that they'll stop eating it.

This seems problematic.
