It's interesting what people see.  I'm the type that needs to be shown this stuff rather than rely on eye witness accounts.  My dad's neighbors have been claiming to have seen a mountain lion in his area.  A couple of months ago I woke up there and was looking out the window and saw a "dog" crossing the driveway down by the gate.  As I watched I realized this thing was moving like a cat.  Maybe a bobcat?  Color was wrong (yellow) and had a full tail.  Hair was too long for it to be a mountain lion, but it was the right color.  It is just a freakishly large cat.  The size of a medium sized dog.  But I could easily understand someone seeing that cat lying in my dad's yard without something to reference to scale the size and thinking it was a mountain lion (as a school bus driver claimed to have seen lying under the trees in my dad's yard).

Wild hogs are claimed to be seen a lot as well.  With all the trail cams I've set, I've never caught one of those either.  Plus, their tracks are a cloven hoof just like a deer so I think a lot of hog evidence really isn't.  Not I'll be hammering the area with trail cams 24/7 soon, so I'll better be able to tell you in a year for sure.

That's wise.  Generally eye witness accounts are wrong on key points more than half the time.  Partly this is due to pareidolia and partly it's due to the nature of memory.  With rare exceptions, our brains don't remember what we saw, we remember remembering what we saw.  It's abstracted to the point that any speculation or misunderstanding can get worked into the memory and the eye witness will be firmly convinced they saw something they didn't actually see.

Most likely there's a cougar around that has left some tracks and been seen by a few folks, but most of the witnesses who've called in just saw a cat and suggestion did the rest.

Why don't they get Walter Palmer out there, he's got experience with this type of game.

This one isn't in a well-known area of a wilderness park so he can lure it out.
