One of my recent American airlines flights was delayed an hour by weather, then once we boarded it was discovered to be over fueled, and we had to wait while they took fuel off. That was another 30 minutes. That's when the flight crew realized they wopuldn't be able to fly the plane due to FAA rules about 10 hours of flying per day. So we had to wait another 30 minutes while a new crew was brought in to fly.

This all happened at the terminal, although they didn't let us get off the flight. They did bring around water and were clearly rushing. Once the new crew came in they made a record run in the air to get us home quickly.

Pretty much every flight has 30-60 minutes of extra time booked in now a days so that flights are never "late" for simple changes.

I mean, it's not like the plane can magically fly 1,000 miles an hour.
