Article with picture.

Posting this for three reasons:
1. I love it when hippies get pepper sprayed, particularly when it's because they're protesting in that state. Hey hippies, stop giving free education to illegal immigrants and your costs will be lower.
2. Their chant: "No cuts, no fees, education should be free". That's just so "utopian", and exactly why people like me get annoyed with them.
3. Check out the picture and caption. Now check out this quote from the article: "However, Mitchell said a mother and young child were not among those treated for the effects of pepper spray." Mitchell is the fire chief, not a cop. So, where's the truth? Is the picture from something else? Was is staged? Did the fire chief lie? Hey utopian hippies, here's a dose of reality for you, I don't know who to believe here because the government lies, the press lies, and protestors lie.

The picture is possibly legitimately from the event, but most likely Mitchell is referring to those who actually turned up for treatment at the college clinic.  Perhaps the mother and child weren't that badly hurt, or didn't know about the clinic, or who knows.  All sorts of reasons that the pic could be legit and Mitchell also not lying.

Without knowing more detail, it sounds like those students were being belligerent.  However if you called an official open public meeting about something that would effect me personally in a strong way and then not let me into that meeting, I would also be belligerent.  It sounds like the cops did the usual "we must completely control this situation" response, which short of responding to some sort of direct physical attacks from the crowd is not a response that should ever be used by police in a free society in response to simple belligerence.

All because a crowd might get ugly and threatening doesn't mean police should treat them that way until they have already clearly turned and become violent.  To do otherwise is a violation of the citizenry and actually much more likely to provoke exactly the result they are claiming to be trying to avoid.  The police are never in the right if they throw the first punch, in a manner of speaking.
