To protest new anti-illegal alien law.
This is really, really fucking stupid unless you're a politician who wants to make Latino voters happy.
First of all, of the $58 million in contracts with Arizona, they can only legally boycott with $7 million.
Secondly, 10 other states are looking to pass similar laws to the Arizona one. Will they boycott all of them too? At what point will they final have to concede and do business with a state that doesn't want illegals?
Interesting quote from the Arizona governor: QUOTE "I find it really interesting that we have people out there that are attempting a boycott in favor of illegal actions in Arizona. That to me is just unbelievable."
Whether you agree with the law or not, she's got a point.
When I first heard about this law I was immediately against it, mainly because I heard they could just stop anyone at random and deport them. After hearing the facts, I'm not so against it anymore.
The law states that the officers can only ask while dealing with another crime. So if the person has been arrested or is getting a traffic ticket, this law comes into play. Otherwise, it's not an issue.
The law itself is nothing new. It simply enforces existing federal law that isn't being enforced.
People claiming they'll need to "carry a passport to go to Arizona" are full of shit. It's already a requirement that legalized immigrants carry their naturalization papers at all times.
It's interesting. 13 million (last estimate I've heard) illegal aliens in this country paying zero taxes while using city, state, and federally funded services is horseshit and has to stop. The feds obviously are dragging their feet, so why can't Arizona take a stand?
The thing is, with 10 other states looking at Arizona as an example, you can expect more to follow. If that happens, you don't want to be the last state without these laws. You'll be stuck with the bill.
California...I'm looking at you...

QUOTE “Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard,’’ Councilman Ed Reyes said, the Los Angeles Times reported. “ What makes you more important than some other city's "voice?" QUOTE As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.’’ The hell? Do they just put you in cuffs, take you to the border, & shove you across without a trial?

Back in the 70's my grandfather was talking to his son-in-law (my father) and told hime that if the Soviets launched nukes and took out New York, Chicago, San Fran and LA, that over-all our nation would be in better shape. For a guy that never finished grade school, he was pretty fucking smart.

QUOTE Dear Mayor Villaraigosa,
I was dismayed to learn that the Los Angeles City Council voted to boycott Arizona and Arizona-based companies — a vote you strongly supported — to show opposition to SB 1070 (Support our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act).
You explained your support of the boycott as follows: “While we recognize that as neighbors, we share resources and ties with the State of Arizona that may be difficult to sever, our goal is not to hurt the local economy of Los Angeles, but to impact the economy of Arizona. Our intent is to use our dollars — or the withholding of our dollars — to send a message.” (emphasis added)
I received your message; please receive mine. As a state-wide elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission overseeing Arizona’s electric and water utilities, I too am keenly aware of the “resources and ties” we share with the City of Los Angeles. In fact, approximately twenty-five percent of the electricity consumed in Los Angeles is generated by power plants in Arizona.
If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation. I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands. If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona’s economy.
People of goodwill can disagree over the merits of SB 1070. A state-wide economic boycott of Arizona is not a message sent in goodwill.
Sincerely,
Commissioner Gary Pierce

This is BULLSHIT! They are ILLEGAL immigrants. They are breaking the law. Where is the debate? Fuck, any other country would put them in jail for just crossing the border. Here we give them medical care and special privileges. ARRRGH!!! WTF!

I'm generally okay with this decision.
While I would like to see more enforcement of illegal emigration laws, on the other hand I absolutely despise the idea of becoming a "papers please" nation. Â Just because a brown-skinned citizen had his wallet stolen is no reason to expect to be locked up until he has been properly identified. Â There's too much likelihood in this of improperly screwing with the lives of perfectly legal citizens.
What I would be in favor of is if in the course of identifying someone because they are being detained for committing a crime they are determined to be illegal then ship 'em out. Â Or if someone comes in to the ER and wants free medical care they should have to show some ID to make sure they aren't illegal (you can still fix them up if you like, but be ready to ship them out when you are done). Â Or require positive identification if someone wants welfare or other handouts. Â Or wants to vote. Â Or puts their kids in school. Â Or in any other way wants to have something for nothing from the government or otherwise exercise a right exclusive to a citizen. Â And if they are then found to be illegal, ship 'em out.
What I don't like is people who then whine "but then they'll be afraid to send their kids to school" or "then they'll be afraid to sign up for welfare". To which I say "good".

Indeed, but that's no reason to expand that treatment into the rest of our lives.

I'm not a brown person in an area known to be full of illegal brown people.
You also get scrutinized more when you return from Jamaica, for drugs. Should that stop? I mean, the answer is YES, but there is precedent. You don't see a federal judge putting stop to that.

I understand your point, but it also sounds like you are saying that since it's already being done then it's okay to do it some more. I know you can't mean that.

QUOTE When the rule of law is subverted for political advantage, there are serious problems. I can think of plenty of reasons to subvert laws for perfectly sane reasons, even if politics is a motivator. My only worry is financial. If folk just trot in across the border, I honestly don't give a good goddamn if they're registered or not as long as they pay the appropriate amount of taxes as other folk living here pay. I'd like money in to be greater than or equal to cash going out. While most taxes are bullshit to begin with, that's another discussion. That being said, officially filling out your citizenship papers makes it lots easier to track whether or not you've paid said financial obligation.
