What would be the purpose for buying an M1 Garand? Target shooting? I know it is a military rifle. Any good for hunting?

It's a .30-06, so sure, you could hunt with it. Depending, of course, upon you state laws concerning magazine capacity. It holds 8 rounds, although I'm sure you could probably get an accessory of some kind to restrict it.

I thought about getting an M1 solely because you can find pre-ban clips for sale.
From my understanding, you can buy old large capacity clips (produced before the ban) but you cannot buy large capacity clips that were made after the ban.
But I figured that I'd never shoot the thing anyway, so I never got it.

Ok, now I'm confused:
1. What ban are you talking about? 2. There's only 1 size clip for a Garand: 8 rounds. Â That's all the magazine will hold. I mean, I guess they might make a SMALLER clip; I dunno.

Camp Perry is nearby. They have a gun store and a rifle range. I have been looking into getting my nephews into gun safety course there. As I read on it gave no prices on the guns but did state that I was only allowed to buy 12 M1s in one calender year. WTF would I do with 12?

Well, that's another use of the Garand, is the match at Camp Perry.

If I could afford a rifle that would make me competitive at the Camp Perry nationals, I would join the tournaments, or whatever they are.

FAQ at CMP
When will M-14’s be available from the CMP?
Although one never knows what may happen in the future, we doubt that M-14’s will ever be available for purchase from the CMP.
Will .45s be available through the CMP?
No.

I see. Well, that's probably the Clinton Gun Ban That Banned Nothing (aka the "Assault Weapons Ban.") But that expired in 2004.
