I am just beginning to form this idea... it literally occurred to me about 20 minutes ago...

So far I've got

1.  You can opt-in to socialism.
2.  All your basic needs will be met, food and housing, health care... with the socialism doctors.  Your housing will be assigned.  You will live there.
3.  You will do the job you are assigned.
4.  You will submit to frequent searches of your home to ensure you are not participating in any economy outside of your socialist one... ie, no candle making, no ebaying for profit, no money-making of any kind.
5.  You will surrender ALL assets.  The system will provide.
6.  You can opt-out of socialism whenever you want, with 18 months notice.  You can NEVER opt back in.
7.  There will be no taxes to pay (and you will be paid what your assigned job will pay, period).
8.  All consumer goods available for purchase will be made available by the government.  You are prohibited from shopping outside the socialist-system-mercantiles.






I just wonder how successful that would be within America, and how many liberals would actually opt-in to it.

I don't know.  I just keep seeing Americans praying for socialism, so it occurred to me to wonder how to give them exactly what they want without destroying the country.  

I think that

9.  Punishment for breaking the rules needs to be swift, and harsh

needs to be a rule.  That's how it ended up being in the USSR.  You can't have people cheating because it hurts the system.
