One of my co-workers is researching hotels for an upcoming trip to Cincinnati, and found the following.
This is for a Days Inn near Cincy:
Most Recent Traveler Reviews: “i'd rather stay in a used coffin†Jun 9, 2012 joes895, Cincinnati, Ohio | Trip type: Family we were driving into cinci and my wife was looking for a hotel to stay in. "How bout days inn?", .."sure babe, thats a reputable hotel chain, it's gotta be...more » we were driving into cinci and my wife was looking for a hotel to stay in. "How bout days inn?", .."sure babe, thats a reputable hotel chain, it's gotta be better than bob's motel - book it, it's only 60 bucks"... so we pull in and there is a hot car parked in front of the lobby ( probably the drug lord), we walk inpast the circle of hooligans smoking and yelling obscenities around a card table, and the odor starts to sting my nostrels. it was like hot amonia in the air. as i walk up to the counter to check in, there is a couple of people who just checked in but before even making it to there room they had turned around to drop their room key off and leave! then as i turn around and ask if my reservation is good the man at the front desk muttered somthing in another language that sounded like -"you'rrr rdeserverbajun eez no goot. Bot you con hov dares". and he hands me the room keys of the people who just walked out of the place.... ok, so i take em and start walking up the dark dungeon-like hallyway to my new room. there was grime and construction dust all over. dirty rental smell like a old abandoned movie theatre. smelled like popcorn and feces . as i keep walking i look into a room where the door is open and you can see all the way through because there was a big 5 ft. by 5 ft hole in the wall where it looked like a wrecking ball had rammed through. it led to the bushes outside. by now i am having second thoughts and realize it ain't worth my life to stay in this rat hole.i didn't make it to my room either... i went back to the desk and canceled everything, got my money back and left just like the people i saw as i was checking in did. it was like a halloween haunted house. a varidable shmorgasboard of crack and bums wandering around the grounds. i was expecting a hotel and i got a zombie apocalypse funhouse. NEVER STAY HERE !!!!!! EVER!!!!!.

Who in the hell thinks that a Days Inn room for $60 would be anything but what they experienced? Or is the review from the 1980's when nice rooms cost $60?

I have never had a problem at a Hampton Inn, but you usually pay for it.
I have had surprisingly good suite-rooms at Extended Stay hotels, in the $50-70 range. Usually.

I guess I don't consider ANY room at a Day Inn 'nice'. Days Inn would be a hotel I don't even consider.
I have good luck with Best Western. I've hit some bad ones, but far more often I get good ones. Plus, with my rewards, I've gotten about $150 back in Amazon gift cards. Plus, there was the time I paid for 4 nights at one hotel with my points, and they never deducted them. So, 4 free nights with the rewards as well. I have $50 in Amazon credit banked up again. I like Hampton as well, but normally end up at a Best Western. Extended stays are doable because of what you get for the price. I'm never very comfortable in them though. But, if I'm in one, it's because I'm working hard on a project and will be too tired to care.
I like Holiday Inn Express as well, but they are normally a good chunk of change more expensive than the Best Western. I'm guessing Troy doesn't pay for his rooms. . .

It all depends on where it is, too. I know a hotel that has pretty good rooms for $19.95 a night just outside San Antonio. Clean and bug free, nice thick walls for a quiet night's sleep, good beds and clean sheets, and an incredibly powerful air conditioner. That's all I expect from a hotel room.
When it comes to hotels, I'm cheap.
