I take it you mean that out of control Prius?

Am I missing something, or can you not shift these cars into neutral or turn their engines off?  Like, who would take the time to call 911 before doing stuff like that?

I've been assuming that in order to make the cars more eco friendly they scraped the neutral gear, figured it was using to many of mother earths precious resources to make. That has to be the only reasons all these drivers, 911 dispatchers, and cops aren't putting the car in neutral.

What police officer is saying to himself "All right I am going to speed up to 100 get around this car and then have them rear end me and both of us will put on the breaks so we can slow this runaway car down!"?

I can somewhat see the driver freaking out in the beginning if you aren't on the expressway but 90mph on the expressway is no big deal and I think after a few moments the neutral option would make sense.

Yes something like that. I was just thinking of traveling down the road for 20 miles at uncontrolled speedes and not doing something about it. I hope I didn't offend anyone in this post.

Turn the car off.  Put the key back to run without starting so you can stear, use emergency brake.  Why blow the engine?

I don't know, but I get the impression that these cars are excel/brake by wire.  So, if the electrical goes out, you don't have control of either.  That's why people are talking about the exceleration issue being software/electrical related.  At any rate, that's why they have emergency brakes.  So, incase of an emergency and your brakes go out, you have a back up.

I'm sure there are ways it could have been stopped.  And if there's really not, then that's a huge design flaw right there.

His first mistake, of course, was driving a Prius.

How about the woman that had 7 rear end accidents.  Don't you think after maybe the second or third you might have parked the car and started asking questions. I truly am losing faith in humans. Beam me up Scotty.

It's the safest small car on the road.

Admittedly, gigantic SUVs are safer, but I'm happy with the size of my penis.

It's certainly safer for the out of control Prius drivers, I doubt they'd even get a scratch when they crush your car.

My car is uncrushable.

On the other hand there's no crumple zones, so the sudden deceleration would still kill me.  But I'll leave an intact - and uncrushed - corpse.

This came up at lunch today, and the folks I was with said the guy did try the emergency brakes, neutral, etc., but nothing worked. Not sure if that's true or not, but if so, it goes from "maybe the driver was an idiot" to "ridiculously unsafe system failure".

Also, it apparently happened again today to a lady pulling out of her driveway.

Toyota is fucked.

Firestone never recovered from their bad tire fiasco of a few years ago.  As far as I know.

I read the article on it a few days ago.  The guy tried using the normal brakes, and it didnt help.  The cop then pulled up with him, told him to use both the brakes and the emergency brakes, and they slowed it down to 50mph, at which point the cop instructed him to put it in neutral (or maybe cut the engine, one of the two), and the cop pulled in front to help block, if needed, and they stopped it.

Article.

So he used the emergency brakes (instructed by the cops) to get it down to 55mph, then finally was able to use the ignition button to turn it off.

Yeah, I want keys in my car.

QUOTE
Sikes called 911 from the freeway on Monday and reported that his gas pedal was stuck. In two calls that spanned 23 minutes, a dispatcher repeatedly told him to throw the car into neutral and turn it off. Sikes later said he had put down the phone to keep both hands on the wheel and was afraid the car would flip if he put it in neutral at such high speed.

What does he think neutral is?
